Steps to choose an ergonomic office chair

Step 1: Get the right position

An ergonomic position is primarily a dynamic posture that allows you to move. Mobility in the seat at the desk promotes blood circulation. Regular bending of the back limits pressure on the intervertebral discs and relieves muscle tension.

Some essential points when sitting:

1 — Keep the distance between the eye and the screen more than 40 cm

2 — Press your back against the backrest to take advantage of the curves designed for this purpose.

3 — Adjust the backrest height to support the lumbar and pelvis

4 — Seat at the bottom of the seat to use the backrest support

5 — Position the forearms horizontally, with the elbow forming a 90° angle

6 — Maintain a minimum angle of 90° at the knees to avoid pressure on the popliteal cavity. The distance between the knees and the desk should be about 10 cm.

7 — Rest your feet flat on the ground or, if necessary, on a footrest

Step 2: Consider your body type

A good office chair must first match the user’s body type, taking into account any issues with the back or blood circulation. Therefore, for an ergonomic office chair to better limit back pain, there are several criteria:

  • The seat of the office chair

The seat should be slightly tilted downwards. If it is flat, it can harm the blood circulation in the legs. An inclined seat ensures the support of the vertebrae as many of them are accompanied by shock absorbers.

  • The backrest of the office chair

The back of the chair should be enveloping. The tighter it is, the less comfortable you will be. And the more the backrest frames the back, the more comfortable the office chair will be.

  • Accompanying your office chair with armrests

More comfortable than a chair without armrests, an office chair with armrests ensures great comfort. Armrests help relieve the muscles of the upper body. There are several types that satisfy each user profile. Therefore, for an ergonomic office chair, it is preferable that the armrests are adjustable: at least in height and, if possible, in other dimensions: front/back and left/right, pin.

Step 3: Consider the duration of use

Prolonged sitting can cause more back pain. That is why it is important to choose the model based on the duration of use. Here are the types of ergonomic office chairs recommended based on daily use:

  • Occasional (<3h)

Switch to a “standard” mechanism. The backrest is fixed, the seat is adjustable in height.

  • Daily (<6h)

Switch to a “permanent contact” mechanism. The backrest of the office chair will follow your movements and remain in “permanent contact” with your back. It can also be locked in the desired position. The back force is adjustable to fit the shape and weight of the body. The seat remains fixed.

You can also opt for a center-tilt mechanism. The backrest and seat tilt at a constant angle to accompany but also cushion all your movements.

  • Intensive (<8H)

Switch to a “synchronous” mechanism. On a synchronous office chair, the backrest and seat tilt in a relationship that always offers optimal comfort. The back force is adjustable to fit the shape and weight of the body. An anti-return safety system prevents any shock to the spine.

You can also choose a tilt axis offset mechanism. The same features as the center-tilt mechanism with an additional advantage, the axis of rotation being moved forward, allowing the feet to remain in contact with the ground regardless of the scale of the swing.

Note: Beware, there are both the best and the worst in ergonomic office chairs. Therefore, prefer well-known brands such as Herman Miller for their quality even if you need to add a few euros. And if it doesn’t fit your budget, you can always choose second-hand.

Step 4:Physical activity exercise****16 Let’s finish our guide with this fourth step because, as we said in the introduction, we are not meant to be sitting. It is therefore important to engage in regular physical activity (about 30 min/day) to limit health problems associated with our modern lifestyles. So get your sneakers on!
