Temporary car insurance: what is it and who needs it?

The liberalization of the market has also affected the insurance world, which is adapting to new trends, offering, in a competitive regime among different companies, various types of offers that can suit the most diverse driving styles and car usage, allowing motorists to choose from a wide range of proposals.

Among these, the temporary policy is spreading, allowing you to insure your car only during certain periods of the year: why pay, for example, even if you are not using the vehicle?

It is true that when we talk about car insurance, we are generally referring to annual contracts, but to meet the increasingly differentiated needs of motorists, several insurance companies have started offering temporary insurance, or rather temporary car RC insurance, namely monthly, semi-annual, or even daily policies.

However, it is necessary to clarify that temporary car insurance should not be confused with provisional deposit policies, which allow you to spread the cost of the premium over 12 months, with monthly, quarterly, or even semi-annual deadlines. Essentially, while semi-annual insurance offers coverage limited to only 6 months, a semi-annual payment policy has an annual duration, while allowing the price to be divided into two payments.

Temporary car insurance: what are the durations?

Depending on your needs, temporary car RC insurance can be valid for a determined period, ranging from one day or a weekend to 5 days, then moving to larger subdivisions, from 1 to 3 to 6 months. Let’s look at the different proposals in detail:

1/2 day temporary insurance:

Those who use the vehicle sporadically, perhaps only on weekends or, more rarely, to move a car for sale or demolition, and thus for a one-day trip, can certainly subscribe to daily or two-day policies. However, it is advisable to read the coverage conditions and the terms offered by the different contracts carefully, as in potential cases of constraint, they could incur quite high penalties. In the various contracts, you can determine how many days per year, month, or week you intend to use the car and only pay for the agreed period.

Of course, it can certainly be suitable for those who use the car a few days a year, we would say for a period estimated at less than four months out of twelve. Always pay attention to the deductibles with which the various RC car insurance companies protect themselves, as we mentioned, in case of non-compliance with the contractual conditions.

5-day insurance:

For those who need RC coverage for a few days, there is a temporary five-day insurance, the conditions of which depend on the company you choose (some, for example, also offer RC coverage abroad and in all countries of the European Community of the green card; even if the car has a foreign license plate). To regularize this policy, there is a need for the registration book, an identity document, and the tax code.

This is not an economical insurance, as we are talking about figures around 100 euros: it is therefore suggested to take it out only in case of real need, for example, it can be useful to drive a borrowed vehicle, or for a test drive on a new car or if you plan to buy or sell your car abroad. A particular alert for this type of temporary insurance comes from IVASS, the Insurance Supervisory Institute, which has urged attention to the abusive marketing of 5-day policies online, advising to verify the information regarding the proposers whose registration in the Single Register of Insurance Intermediaries cannot be verified, specifying that the website you are addressing must contain them, since if the person is not identifiable, it is abusive marketing.

We also clarify that at the time of subscription, it will be necessary to inform the insurance company at least 24 hours in advance for how many days you intend to activate the coverage, as well as the precise start date and duration.

Monthly car insurance:

This insurance policy is useful for those who need coverage for their car for a period not exceeding one calendar month, always with attention at the time of stipulation, during which it is recommended to read the conditions and clauses carefully, checking all the coverage and limits of the policy itself, as well as the actual price of the insurance premium. Furthermore, it should be kept in mind that monthly insurance never perfectly corresponds to one-twelfth of the annual policy, as the savings consist precisely in the fact that you can stipulate for such broken and limited periods.

The monthly coverage is ideal for temporary use of the vehicle, such as in the case of buying and selling several cars, while those who already know the period of use of the car can contact their insurance by concluding an annual contract using the policy suspension option.

Quarterly or semi-annual insurance:

We now see temporary quarterly or semi-annual car insurance, perhaps the most classic alternative to annual coverage. Very important, it is to distinguish quarterly insurance from “paid” quarterly insurance, because the latter refers only to the portion of the annual premium divided into four installments, still considering an annual policy. However, in the case of quarterly or semi-annual insurance, we must take into account a limited insurance coverage in time.

These temporary insurances guarantee protection for a few months a year and, although they seem advantageous, attention must be paid to the rules of use, as it is not always possible to have an economic advantage. For example, often, the premium does not undergo a proportional reduction to the period, but only a slight decrease compared to the total annual policy.

This can be interesting for motorists who use the car only at certain times of the year, even if you need to know that quarterly and semi-annual insurance generally provides a fixed base cost for the initial percentage and the rest differentiated based on the kilometers traveled, thus considering a cost per km higher than that of traditional insurance.

But what are the costs of temporary insurance?

It has been calculated that this type of insurance can be agreed upon if the car is used less than four months a year: savings can be 50% compared to classic insurance if you use it for 10 days a year, then drop to 25% as you reach 100 solar days.

With just a few steps in a short time, we now all have the opportunity to find out, in a few minutes, how much a temporary policy can cost us, thanks to online quotes that also ensure verification and comparisons between companies.

Overall, temporary car insurance can cost around 10 euros per day, but the final figure depends on fixed variables such as, let’s say, the age of the motorist, the locality in which they live, and the years of the car’s life. Some companies also take into account the driver’s “CV”: fines, tickets, and accidents can affect the insurance premium even if, in general, a temporary police car insurance is inversely proportional to the frequency with which the vehicle is used.

Unfortunately, convenience is not a strong point of temporary insurance, as they can cost, precisely, 10 euros per day, and, moreover, impose quite rigid limitations on the use of the vehicle, calculating that it can only be distributed on the days agreed in advance with the company and indicated in the contract.

Cost of car insurance for 1/5 days

The cost of a daily car policy (or 5 days) is calculated from a fixed fee (usually 15% of the annual premium of traditional insurance), plus an additional charge for each day of use.

Cost of quarterly and semi-annual car insurance

Again, the price consists of a standard quota and an, depending on the number of days or weeks/months for which you need coverage. It is good to know that the cost of insurance, for example quarterly, will never correspond to a quarter of the premium of a corresponding annual policy, but will certainly be higher.

Online temporary car insurance.

We mentioned the possibility of quotes via the Internet, quick and safe, and this is true. All thanks to online insurance, which has come with the liberalization of the market, effectively revolutionizing the entire insurance sector: the use of the network, in fact, has allowed for a reduction in rental costs, as well as those of personnel management, with undeniable benefits for the competitive regime and, consequently, benefits for customers who today find decidedly cheaper policies, estimated in a savings range between 10 and 30% compared to traditional agencies.

Moreover, online insurance sites, even just to eliminate the lack of physical reference locations, are generally very well done, offering complete and articulated information about the services offered.

Temporary car insurance per km: what is it?

As you may have understood, temporary car insurance is not very affordable, as their cost is never equal to the corresponding fraction of an annual policy: to save, you can therefore opt for alternative insurance solutions such as temporary insurance per km, the right solution if during the year, you use the car constantly, but for a limited number of miles. This formula allows you to pay a reduced annual premium, calculated, precisely, based on the distance traveled. Still in the category of temporary policies (km), also called “Pay for use”, as can be easily understood, is suitable for those who do not use their car frequently or for those who only travel short distances. In this case, the amount of the premium is calculated by multiplying the base cost by the number of kilometers you plan to travel in a year, which will be measured by the insurance company using a satellite device. Be careful not to exceed the specified mileage, otherwise they could trigger penalties or adjustments to the temporary car insurance premium.

Which companies offer temporary car policies?

Unfortunately, almost no company agrees to insure a vehicle for a few days because, regarding the cost of the annual premium, a policy for such a limited period is very impractical. The situation is better for temporary car insurance per km, for which we now provide some interesting suggestions for quotes and comparisons also online:
